Tanzeem-e Islami

Tanzeem-e Islami was formed by the Late Dr. Israr Ahmed during 1957 when he got disgruntled by Jamat-e Islami for joining the mainstream politics. According to the mission statement stated on the organization’s website[1] “Tanzeem-e Islami is a revolutionary organization working for Khilafah on the methodology of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as mentioned on Quran and Sunnah.” Under TI’s banner Dr. Israr Ahmed started delivering commentaries on the Holy Quran and Sunnah till the 1970’s. After Zia ul-Haque proclaimed martial law, Dr. Israr was given a chance to present his views on the state run TV channel on Zia’s personal request. It was Dr. Israr who gradually pushed the Zia regime and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to introduce dupatta or so called modest dresses for women newscasters and actresses, which forced many women to quit their jobs. The concept of Hijab or Niqab was not very common at that time in the country. Zia also knew about the revolutionary thoughts of Khilafah being spread by the Late Dr. Israr, which he allowed because it was his personal desire to see a modern day Islamic Caliphate. However, after some time Dr. Israr opted to leave.[2] The Tanzeem is now headed by Dr. Israr’s son Hafiz Akif Saeed. Tanzeem-e Islami has mostly kept a low profile, only surfacing occasionally. The anti-valentine’s day campaign run by Tanzeem invited a lot of anger from the liberal circles. Sabeen Mehmood, founder of T2F started a counter-campaign titled ‘Pyar ho jane do’ in reaction to the anti-valentine’s day campaign run by the Tanzeem. Tanzeem- Islami has recently started a massive campaign, at least in the Rawalpindi/Islamabad region, where their posters can be seen advocating for Khifalat and an Interest-free banking system.

Tanzeem-e Islami also publishes magazines and newsletters including Nida-e Khilafat, Meesaq and Hikmat-e Quran. Their website contains links to several books written by Dr. Israr Ahmed, his lectures and videos.

One of the most alarming facts that requires attention of the authorities is that one of Safoora Goth’s murderer named Ali ur-Rehman aka Tony was regularly attending Tanzeem-e Islami’s lectures, who was the main culprit in Saad Aziz’s radicalization, another Safoora Goth murderer.[3]
